Throughout his writing, Salinger tried to incorporate a little about himself in the characters. In The Catcher in the Rye Salinger portrayed himself in Holden Caulfield. At the beginning of the story Holden was at Pencey Prep., a school based off of Valley Forge Military Academy, where Salinger went to school. Holden, like Salinger flunked out of multiple schools before going to Pencey and again flunking out. Holden, like Salinger was the fencing team manager and when he left school they both went back to their homes in New York City.
In Nine Stories there are many less references about Salinger, but he did sneak in a few. For example, In "De Daumier- Smith's Blue Period" John Smith lives in New York City after living in Paris during the great depression years. He also finds a new school and moves away again. Also "The Laughing Man" takes place in New York City where an unnamed main character attends school.
Also in Franny and Zooey the setting takes place in New York City. After Franny leaves college she comes to New York City to go on a date with her old boyfriend. After an unsuccessful date, she goes back to her family's apartment where she gets settled and calm. Franny was also having trouble in school just like Salinger and Holden Caulfield.
Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour; An introduction also has the New York City setting but it is not written or described. Buddy is writing the story from the Glass family house, the same house that Franny and Zooey was set in.
New York City was not only where Salinger grew up, but he has many good memories there unlike many of his other life experiences. Salinger probably writes about New York city because it brings back old, good memories. Salinger uses these themes from his own experiences so that he can elaborate on them and make then much more realistic than if he hadn't experienced them.
